Open the door to Key West’s past when you arrive at Concha Cabana, a quaint, 1923 shotgun house and
guesthouse just a stone’s throw from where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico.
Located in a convenient spot in historic Old Town, this 1-bedroom 1 bathroom house with pool house and half bath is
between the Southernmost Point and the Ernest Hemingway house. Near the corner where
Whitehead Street meets Catherine Street, it’s only a block-and- a-half from Duval Street and the
world-famous “La-Te- Da” and walking distance to the island’s famous lighthouse and The
Completely restored, update and uniquely furnished, your hosts have missed no detail inside or
out. You’ll find a cozy, turn-key- ready home away from home with everything you need for day-
Behind the white picket fence is a paver sidewalk and steps leading to a breezy, cheery front
porch where you can sit and watch the locals and visitors pass by on foot, bicycle, scooter,
skateboard and stroller.
Furnished in vintage rattan seating and accents with a tropical motif, the living room has a warm
wood floor and is sunlit by five large windows. A miniature art gallery unto itself, its walls are
adorned with original art by Key West artists Martha DePoo, Will Fernandez, Sean Patrick
Callahan, Bill Matson and Abigail White. Art pottery by Key West Pottery artist Adam Russell
is featured throughout the home.
The modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances faces the living room with its wide bar,
perfect for entertaining. The countertops are a striking earth-tone granite with real wood
cabinetry offering plenty of storage.
Dine at the vintage dinette under a rattan swag light. The convenient built-in desk is the perfect
place to surf the internet or correspond with friends and family “off the rock” of Key West.
The nostalgic master bathroom has an onyx tile interior and tropical décor, including a shower
curtain with a vintage cigar label motif, a historical nod to Key West’s early days. There is
plenty of convenient storage in the well-stocked linen closet full of fluffy, colorful towels and
built-in drawers outside the bathroom door in the hallway to the bedroom. Original art can even
be found here, too, including “Key West Gothic” by Key West artist William Welch.
The large bedroom in the main house will make its guest feel right at home with a large closet –
unusual in most Old Town homes. A vintage “blonde” “high-boy” chest of drawers by designer
Russell Wright provides plenty of space in which to unpack your suitcase. Blinds in the bedroom
(and living room, too) provide your choice of sunlight or privacy.
Concha Cabana is ideal for a single person or couple, but can accommodate up to four guests by
using the queen-size pull out sofa in the guest house. The property is a smoke-free environment.
Step through the back door of the original house onto a wide and shady back porch to read,
snooze, or just listen to the sounds of the neighborhood under the breezy ceiling fan. The entire
property has a privacy fence and is pet-friendly. (Small dogs only are allowed with prior
The back porch overlooks a colorful cocktail pool with jacuzzi jets. The wood deck includes a
patio table for four with a large umbrella that adds to the comfy wicker settee and rockers on the
back porch. Trunks in which to store cushions in the event of rain are provided as well.
The deck connects the original house to a guest cottage built in 2013. The bright room can serve
as a family room for watching TV on the couch or as a place for guests or tenants. It has a large
clerestory window and a pitched, volume ceiling, as well as original art by Al Black, one of the
original Florida Highwaymen artists and by local Key West artists David Scott Meier and Kelly
Lever. The cottage includes a half-bath and a laundry room with a full-size washer and dryer.
Even the half-bath features original art by the late Key West watercolorist, Kevin Peterson. A
closet provides space not only for hanging some clothes, but for a refrigerator, microwave and
coffee maker so that guests don’t have to go to the main kitchen to make a cup of tea or coffee or
to warm up leftovers from one of Key West’s many world-class restaurants.
A spacious outdoor shower – much sought after in Key West – provides luxury and privacy with
its tall, complete enclosure, four stainless steel clothes hooks, a soap/conditioner/lotion
dispenser, and a 12” rain showerhead.
The property has been professionally landscaped with native plant varieties and has landscape
lighting to accent plantings as well as to illuminate the convenient walk of stepping stones from
front to back. The deck is partially sunny and partially shaded by a neighboring Tamarind tree,
purported to be the largest one in North America. There’s plenty of privacy for sunning.
Only three houses away – and visible from the kitchen window – is a community center with a
huge public swimming pool and a deck that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. With lovely parks on
either side of it, the view at this free amenity is a local secret! It’s ideal for anyone who loves to
swim laps. You can also make a daily short bike ride to the gorgeous, tree-lined beachs of
historic Ft. Zachary Taylor or nearby South Beach.
You’ll feel like a real “Conch” staying at Concha Cabana. Come see for yourself!
